Great Expectations - 2013
Xerxes Wania, President and CEO, Sidense
Celebrating the end-of-season holidays is a good time to reflect on the events of 2012 and look forward to 2013 as one of positive change and progress in our industry. While the current year is forecast to be one of decline in the overall semiconductor market, most analysts are predicting recovery in 2013 with growth ranging from around 4.5% (WSTS Autumn 2012) to 8% or more from other recent forecasts. As we anticipate the coming year, it is important as always to understand the drivers for growth and to position ourselves to make the most of the opportunities in front of us.
IP as Far as the Eye Can See
By Warren Savage, President and CEO, IPextreme
Isaac Newton once said, "If I see farther than others it is because I stand on the shoulders of giants." The same can be said of the semiconductor industry today. Every advance in technology is built on the blood, sweat and tears of the brilliant men and women that worked in this industry before us.
While Moore's Law has reliably predicted the doubling of the number of transistors on integrated circuits every two years since the mid-1960's, its importance is beginning to wane as there are fewer and fewer applications that can take advantage of the economics afforded by all those transistors. Instead, we are seeing an increased level of differentiation through a company's creative application of IP, which is being leveraged in three ways:
